Objectives and Benefits
A centralized and efficient system management is
the key solution to saving money by decreasing operation costs and by
increasing the quality of service.
The System Management flow can be represented by the following view
:

The key for a good return on investment is the control
loop at the bottom of the figure : to capture data from equipment, compare the
value with an ideal behavior, and react on the data to improve the equipment.
To be efficient this loop requires control over the whole Information System.
OpenMaster has been available in GCOS 8 system
environments for many years and provides an efficient way to concurrently
manage hardware resources as well as applications :
DPS 9000 : CPU's, Memory, peripherals...
Libraries
MainWay, Datanets
FCP's
FDDI
Data communication equipment.
Also operation tasks and applications :
Console Management
Job Scheduling
Save & Restore
TP8 Monitor
OpenMaster uses an object oriented architecture
based on the CMIS ISO standard and supports all existing management
protocols.
OpenMaster takes into account 3 constraints that
are :
Using
existing management protocols to access
most equipment
Collecting
data while minimizing network traffic
Fitting
in with the customer structure
SNMP is the de facto standard for the management
of almost all data products.
A GCOS 8 SNMP agent : Agent8 is available and provides hundreds of metrics.
DSAC Agent is available for DSA Network monitoring.
A graphic representation of computing resources can be drawn with an
OpenMaster tool to make up the control board.

Fit with customer structure
Depending on the number of monitored equipment and applications,
all features may reside on a single OpenMaster workstation.
It is possible to have more than one workstation connected to a single
OpenMaster server. In the most complex cases, the Supra Management feature
allows a multiple-level of control.
Each OpenMaster manager that makes up part of a supra-management configuration
acts either as a an manager or agent, or both, at intermediary level.
This allows the distribution of management tasks and very good scalability.
OpenMaster Alarm allows a synthetic representation of
your alarm signals; it is integrated with Monitor and allows a sophisticated
filtering. Action can be taken on the alarm signals.
Global view & Control
board
A global view of the system with monitored objects represented
by icons is provided to let the administrator / operator know at a glance
of any abnormal events.
OpenMaster Monitor provides a global, graphical and interactive view
of the managed networks, systems and all monitored objects.
Icons are animated on the map to reflect the current status of the resource,
i.e. green = OK, red = KO, etc..
Create the required
indicators
Performance Monitoring Service executes any query, built
by CMIS query builder at the required time and compares its value with
a threshold. The result can generate an event, an alarm or some graphical
change in the control board. These queries are sent for instance, to
Agent8.
Launch automated actions
Event Processor is the mechanism which allows pre-defined
actions to be automatically executed when abnormal events occur and/or
indicators reach specific values.
It enables the automatical prevention or reaction to abnormal situations.
See also rules-based event correlation for increased power and maintainability.
OpenMaster has integrated Remedy's ARS world leading solution
in OpenMaster Trouble Ticketing. OpenMaster is the focal point of alarms
coming from GCOS, open systems, network etc. For every relevant alarm
(after filtering) it is possible to automatically generate a trouble
ticket which will be very helpful in following the problem. Thanks to
the product it is also possible to generate tickets manually, for instance
at a help-desk.
Pilot is a very powerful console management tool.
It captures and concentrates all console messages from one or several
systems and after analysis and filtering mechanisms, it performs automatically
the appropriate actions according to scripts : alarm raising, message
generation, logging, special visualization, etc. and can automatically
reply to and/or send commands, pagers, and faxes etc.

One major advantage of Pilot is the merge of the world
of the system console and the world of OpenMaster, allowing the translation
of a message into an event or alarm.
Pilot provides an effective multi-system control through automation
and concentration of functions.
It can drive multiple systems under different operating systems such
as Mainframes, front-ends, UNIX,
IBM from a single station.
Pilot also provides remote facilities such as voice synthesis, pagers,
fax and mail to contact operation specialists in their office or at
home.
Pilot Remote Boot and Control Facility
Pilot Access to Service Processor to
allow restart after a crash
DPS 9000 script & filter support available
Scripts are specific to RSA environment
OS Manager8 is designed for the following types of users :
"Help Desk" personel, looking
for an "at a glance" view of the health of the system.
Operators, to obtain additional graphic information on a systems
status
Technical Support personnel, to get early information on potential
problems.
When a problem occurs, additional OSMGR8 screens
can be consulted, and/or other diagnosis tools can be employed. It monitors
pre-selected objects and provides predefined indicators and maps.
The data are collected by Agent8. Some of the data displayed by OS Manager8
are :

ProcessesCPU
- Memory usage
- Page faults
- I/Os
- Zoom on specific domains :
- Channel, Periphery etc.
OpenMaster Job Scheduler for job control
Job Scheduler is a distributed scheduling solution
available for UNIX, Windows NT and GCOS 8 systems.
Based on the Dollar Universe product developed by our partner ORSYP,
OpenMaster Job Scheduler meets the challenges of batch process management
in todays world of heterogeneity, downsizing and client-server
applications. Its innovative approach provides automation with security
and reliability, increasing productivity and improving the overall quality
of production services.
The Cooperative Architecture increases performance
and provides almost non-stop service;
Management Units boost flexibility, so that processes can adapt automatically
to changes in the logical or physical configuration;
The use of for parallel Areas, with separate data and services, simplifies
implementation and deployment;
The SAP Interface for OpenMaster Job Scheduler adds all the functions
needed to manage SAP R/3 production processes.
The GCOS 8 Job Scheduler component enables the synchronization of UNIX
jobs and GCOS 8 jobs launched from UNIX by Job Scheduler.
The GCOS 8 Job Scheduler Agent (JSAGT) is a GCOS 8 host resident product
designed to work in conjunction with the OpenMaster Job Scheduler via
TCP/IP.
JSAGT includes JSX program, which allows site personel to monitor the
JSAGT operation and therefore control traffic to and from external systems.
System Performance provides a single, unified and consistent
performance view for multiple GCOS 8 sites as well as for distributed,
heterogeneous systems.
System Performance is very easy to use and offers multiple "pre-set"
analysis methods.
It allows on-line monitoring as well as replay and off-line analysis.
System Performance uses an optimized protocol to survey large computers;
it gathers a large amount of data : process, files, peripherals, that
it sends with every period. On each target system the intelligent agent
is able to focus on useful data.
When collecting the data, System Performance can compare it with a threshold
, and send an alarm to the central OpenMaster where the corresponding
con becomes red.
System Performance stores data on files to allow a replay and further
investigation either with the same graphical interface or with OpenMaster
Statistic or a spreadsheet.
TP8 Monitor
TP8 Monitor provides centralized real-time monitoring
of TP8 Workstations on multiple GCOS 8 systems, with the option of logging
data for future analysis.
It is intended for use by TP8 administrators and GCOS 8 system operators.
TP8 administrators define the TP8 workstations and associated data to
be monitored, set low and high thresholds, set refresh rates, and save
the resulting display environment.
GCOS 8 system operators or automated tasks start TP8 Monitor with the
appropriate display environment, then contacts TP8 administrators when
thresholds are exceeded and abnormal situations occur.
Monitored objects :
TP8 workstations
buffer pools
concurrency control
XCP2 Workstation
XCP2 Session Pool
